September is when Barcelona gets its city back — and then throws its biggest party. The date that defines September: La Mercè (23–27 September)
Barcelona's biggest festival closes the season: castellers building human towers in Plaça Sant Jaume, giants parading the old town, concerts on open-air stages across the city, and the closing fireworks-and-music show at the Montjuïc fountains. The 2026 guest city is Shanghai. Almost everything is free — the art is in choosing where to be at nightfall.
Summer's last acts
- Mas i Mas Festival — the club-and-concert marathon plays its final week, until 6 September.
- 'Estiu als museus' — the summer-at-the-museums programme runs across Barcelona's museums until 20 September.
- 'Xoco Trencadís' workshops at the Chocolate Museum — Gaudí's mosaic technique, in chocolate, until 13 September.
- Live craft workshops at Poble Espanyol — artisans working in the open until 30 September.
Gaudí Year keeps rolling
2026 is Any Gaudí — the centenary year — and Barcelona's turn as World Capital of Architecture, with exhibitions and events threaded through the whole calendar. September additions from the feed: guided visits to 'L'assalt de la il·lusió' at the Centre d'Arts Santa Mònica (until 27 September) and the trencadís collective-artwork visits at Torre Bellesguard, Gaudí's least-visited house. The big music series carry on too: Guitar BCN, the Mil·lenni Festival and the 58th Barcelona Jazz Festival all run deep into the year.
One for the calendar: dinner under the stars
'Sopar amb estrelles' at the Fabra Observatory — dinner on the 1904 observatory's terrace above the city, followed by a look through the telescope — runs until 4 October. It books out; treat the first weeks of September as your window.
