Barcelona's festival calendar builds toward one week in late September: as of 7 September 2026 the Barcelona ArtWalk app tracks 374 live events and 672 galleries and exhibitions across the city. The centerpiece is La Mercè, the city's own patron-saint festival, but a gallery weekend, a book fair and two exhibitions in their final days all land in the same four weeks. Here's what's worth planning around.
La Mercè 2026: Barcelona's biggest street party (23–27 September)
Barcelona throws its own five-day birthday party for its patron saint, Mare de Déu de la Mercè, whose feast day falls on 24 September. The opening pregó and the year's first sardanes in front of the Cathedral kick things off on 23 September; the feast day itself fills Plaça de Sant Jaume with gegants, capgrossos, castellers and correfocs, followed by the Cavalcada de la Mercè parade with giants up to four metres tall. This year's guest city is Shanghai, bringing articulated dragon performances to the Parc del Fòrum. Every stage, human tower and fire-run is free.

Barcelona Gallery Weekend: 17–20 September
The 12th edition brings 25 galleries across Barcelona and L'Hospitalet de Llobregat together for new shows by more than 50 artists, plus free guided routes and talks from Barcelona Gallery Weekend. Last chance: two shows closing this week
- Kapwani Kiwanga: Estats canviants — the artist's first Spanish retrospective, at Fundació Joan Miró since April. Closes 13 September; €17 online, €18 at the door.
- Ouka Leele: Barcelona 1978–1980 — previously unseen negatives from the hand-painted-photography pioneer's years in the city, at RocioSantaCruz gallery. Closes 9 September.
Free this month: Setmana del Llibre en Català (18–27 September)
The 44th edition of Catalonia's biggest book fair takes over Passeig de Lluís Companys with 98 stands, 282 publishing imprints and more than 350 activities — talks, literary routes and author signings — running the same ten days as La Mercè. Entry is free.
Big nights: concerts worth planning around
- Rock The Sun Festival — hard rock and sleaze, headlined by Eclipse and Michael Monroe, at Poble Espanyol, 18–19 September. Tickets from €55 per day.
- Mac DeMarco — Sala Razzmatazz, 16 September, the same night Gallery Weekend's previews open.
